Trauma-Informed Care Course Overview

This 3-hour continuing education course provides mental health professionals with comprehensive training in trauma-informed care principles and practices. Trauma-informed care is an organizational and clinical approach that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma on individuals and integrates this understanding into all aspects of service delivery.

Participants will learn how trauma affects the brain and body, explore the six key principles of trauma-informed care (safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural sensitivity), and develop practical skills for implementing trauma-informed practices in clinical settings. This course emphasizes creating therapeutic environments that avoid re-traumatization while supporting client autonomy and resilience.

Trauma-Informed Care Learning Objectives

  • Define trauma-informed care and explain its importance in mental health treatment settings

  • Describe the neurobiological effects of trauma on brain development, stress response, and behavior
  • Apply the six core principles of trauma-informed care: safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural humility
