Does Iowa require abuse reporting training?
Yes. Iowa mandates dependent adult abuse and child abuse training for mandatory reporters. Counselors must complete 2 hours of each (DHS training), with 1-hour recertification every 3 years.
What is Iowa's supervision CE requirement?
Iowa requires 3 hours of continuing education in supervision for Counselors, Social Workers, and MFTs. Starting in 2024, Addiction Counselors in supervisory roles must also complete 3 hours of supervision training.
Does Iowa accept online continuing education?
Yes, with limits for some professions. Addiction Counselors can complete a maximum of 20 credits through distance learning. Other professions generally accept online CE.

Why do Social Workers have fewer CE hours than other professions?
Iowa Social Workers require only 27 hours every 2 years, compared to 40 hours for other professions. The renewal cycle also differs (January to December rather than September to September).
