This text-based course was developed in 2024 for mental health professionals. This course will help in assessing sex offenders, focusing on assessment tools, risk techniques, treatment options, and legal and ethical considerations.

This comprehensive 10-module course is designed to provide mental health professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct effective criminal justice assessments for sex offenders. Participants will learn about the assessment tools, risk assessment techniques, treatment options, and ethical considerations related to working with this specific population. The course will also cover legal and policy aspects of sex offender management, ensuring mental health professionals can make informed decisions and contribute to safer communities.
Course Objectives:
In this course, you will learn to:
Understand the legal and historical context of sex offender assessment within the criminal justice system and the role of mental health professionals in this process.
Identify and differentiate between various sex offender typologies, including psychopathy and paraphilias, to inform effective assessment and treatment strategies.
Familiarize participants with commonly used sex offender assessment tools and instruments, enabling them to administer, interpret, and utilize assessment results effectively.
Develop the ability to conduct risk assessments for sex offenders, including the identification of static and dynamic risk factors and the formulation of risk management strategies.
Acquire knowledge of evidence-based treatment modalities and cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques specifically tailored for sex offenders, ensuring the delivery of effective interventions.
Apply ethical principles and considerations when working with sex offenders, including navigating confidentiality issues, dual relationships, and dilemmas related to duty to warn.

Course completion requirements: To earn CE credit, professionals must purchase the course, read/listen to the presentation, and complete the posttest (with a passing score of 80%) and course evaluation. Posttests may be retaken as many times as you need. Certificates of completion will be emailed immediately after course completion and can be accessed from your account anytime.
