This text-based course was developed in 2023 for Mental Health Professionals. This course trains counselors to identify, assess, and respond to child abuse and neglect effectively.

The Child Abuse Assessment and Reporting course is designed to equip licensed professional counselors with the knowledge, skills, and ethical considerations necessary to effectively identify, assess, and respond to child abuse and neglect cases. This comprehensive course will cover various forms of child maltreatment, applicable legal and reporting obligations, and best practices for supporting and protecting the well-being of child victims. Participants will gain valuable insights into the dynamics of abuse, its impact on children, and the critical role counselors play in the protection and intervention process.
Course Objectives:
In this course, you will learn to:
Explore the different forms of child abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional, and neglect, to recognize signs and symptoms indicative of abuse in children.
Identify individual, familial, and environmental risk factors that contribute to child maltreatment, as well as protective factors that can mitigate its impact.
Learn effective assessment techniques, interview protocols, and evidence-gathering strategies to assess potential child abuse cases sensitively and accurately.
Understand the legal responsibilities and reporting requirements related to child abuse and neglect, including mandatory reporting laws and counselor-client confidentiality limitations.
Develop communication skills to engage with child clients, their families, and other professionals involved in child protection, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.
Examine the physical, emotional, and psychological effects of child abuse on victims and understand the complexities of trauma and its manifestations in children.
Explore evidence-based interventions and therapeutic modalities for working with child abuse survivors and their families to promote healing and resilience.
Recognize the cultural factors influencing child-rearing practices and responses to child abuse, promoting sensitivity and effectiveness in cross-cultural counseling.
Identify prevention strategies and community resources to address the root causes of child abuse and promote child safety and well-being.

Course completion requirements: To earn CE credit, professionals must purchase the course, read/listen to the presentation, and complete the posttest (with a passing score of 80%) and course evaluation. Posttests may be retaken as many times as you need. Certificates of completion will be emailed immediately after course completion and can be accessed from your account anytime.
