What is the National Counselor Examination (NCE)?

The National Counselor Examination (NCE) is a standardized exam administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). It's required for licensure in most states and is a key step toward becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or similar credential.

The NCE consists of 200 multiple-choice questions (160 scored, 40 unscored pretest items) covering the 8 CACREP content areas. You'll have 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete the exam. A passing score is determined by a criterion-referenced passing standard set by NBCC.

Whether you're a graduate student preparing for initial licensure or a professional seeking national certification, thorough NCE exam prep is essential for success.

NCE Study Tips: How to Prepare for the Exam

Preparing for the National Counselor Examination requires a strategic approach. Here's how to maximize your study time:

1
Start Early and Create a Study Schedule
Begin studying at least 2-3 months before your exam date. Dedicate consistent time each day rather than cramming. Break content into manageable chunks across the 8 domains.
2
Focus on Weak Areas First
Take a practice test early to identify gaps. Spend more time on domains where you score lowest. Most test-takers struggle with Research & Statistics or Assessment—don't neglect these.
3
Practice with Realistic Questions
The NCE uses application-based questions, not just recall. Practice answering scenario-based questions that require you to apply theories and concepts to clinical situations.
4
Know the Major Theorists
Memorize key figures: Freud, Rogers, Ellis, Beck, Glasser, Perls, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg, Super, Holland, and others. Know their core concepts and how they differ.
5
Take Timed Practice Exams
Simulate real test conditions. Practice answering 200 questions in under 4 hours. This builds stamina and helps you develop pacing strategies for exam day.
